By Mrs Harriss on 26th May 2011
The sun shone for the Year 1 Open Garden Event on Tuesday 24th May. It was well attended by many mums, dads, grandmas and aunties. Each child was able to take their visitors around the kitchen garden to show them the plants they have sown and tended, including the experimental upside down potato.
The upside down potato was a little investigation to find out if a seed potato could still send its shoots and roots in the right direction if it was planted shoot downwards. We found out that it can!
The wild garden was also open to visitors and the bug houses and bird feeders were much admired, as were the newly planted apple trees and the greengage tree. The pond was a popular spot where wildlife was clearly evident. Water snails, tadpoles, frogs and pond skaters were easy to observe and caused much excitement.
The afternoon was rounded off with delicious cold drinks and homemade biscuits made by all the Year 1 children and served by Mrs Humpherson and Mrs Crabb with some very helpful Year 6 children.
At the end of the day each child took home the tomato plant they had grown from seed; which they will continue to tend and hopefully be able to harvest later in the summer.
A good time was had by all and the Year 1 team would like to say thank you for all your support.
