School Year:

Class 10 visit the Festival of Literature

By Mrs Morris on 17th October 2011

On Thursday 13th October Year 4 visited the Literature Festival.  We listened to a talk by John Dougherty in the morning and we attended a workshop with the poet James Carter in the afternoon.

(Please see class 9’s report about John Dougherty’s talk)

After lunch we went along to the studio for our workshop with James Carter.  The workshop got off to a strange start as James refused to talk to us for the first 5 minutes, instead preferring to play his guitar and mime!!  We began to wonder if he had lost his voice, but then he began sharing some of his poems with us.

We were all encouraged to join in with the reading of the poems, and the teachers did not escape from this!  Mr Seeley was complimented on his dramatic pause, whilst Mrs Morris was armed with a microphone!  Her talents are clearly wasted as a teacher as James suggested a career as a talk show host beckons!

We then had fun writing our own Kennings (poems with 2 words on each line, the second word ending in –er) about different animals.  We came up with fabulous ideas such as ‘desert dweller’ ‘mouse eater’ and James enjoyed hearing our creations.

We all had a really super time

and are looking forward to writing more poems that rhyme!!
