Cheltenham & North Tewkesbury Primary School Tag Rugby Festival – 29th March 2012

On Thursday 29th March I took 12 players to the Tag Rugby festival at Newlands, Bishops Cleeve. It was a bright and sunny day and everybody was very excited about the challenge.

This tournament has always provided a great opportunity for children to test their skills in a competition. As usual it was well supported with 46 teams taking part, divided into 8 pools. We were drawn in Pool 4 and played five matches during the morning session. Leckhampton drew their first match 5-5 and then went on to win all the remaining 4 matches. At the end of the morning Leckhampton were first in their pool having got 9 points and scoring the most tries.

During the afternoon Leckhampton played four other matches with the other top-ranked teams in a knock-out phase. The only match they lost was against the eventual winners of the Shield, Woodmancote. Overall Leckhampton were placed 5th out of 46 teams which we all agreed was a creditable performance.

There were some outstanding performances during the day with special mention to the Captain, Benedict Young, who led the team and who never stopped ripping those tags. I was very proud of the way that they played as a team with grit and determination. I really hope that the children involved will continue to play the sport in the future, either tag or contact!
