Leckhampton Girls vs St James’ Girls – The Rematch!
30th May 2019Following a humbling 6-0 loss in an away match two months ago, we looked to seek revenge as this time we were the hosts against St James’ Primary School. Large crowds gathered in anticipation to watch these two amazing teams in action and they weren’t left disappointed!
Leckhampton started superbly and broke into an early lead with a lovely finish from Lola Hunton at the back post following an excellent cross. St James’, however, showed their quality and came back into the match; as the half time whistle blew, they held a 2-1 lead. The second half saw constant changes in momentum, some unbelievable goals and some relentless nail-biting from the vast crowds!
As the second half progressed, Leckhampton posed an ever increasing threat. The finest moment of the match came quickly, as Isabelle Forsyth produced a Lionel Messi like run. Weaving in and out of the St James’ defenders, she found herself moving with the ball away from the goal towards the right touchline before producing a scintillating turn to shift back towards goal, taking 2 defenders out of the game before popping the ball onto her left foot and fizzing a shot into the bottom corner of the net – a truly magnificent goal! An incredible volley from outside of the box into the top corner from Charis Grice then sent Leckhampton 3-2 ahead; both fans and players alike were sensing a dramatic win. A fine goal from St James’ levelled the score with 5 minutes remaining, the score locked at 3-3. A flurry of Leckhampton attacks ensued and with a superb left-footed finish, Millie Chappell-Smith thundered the home side into a 4-3 lead with only 2 minutes on the clock, sending the fans into euphoria! A victory was not to be, however, as a deflected free kick from St James’ in the final minute brought the score level.
Although we didn’t get the victory that looked so possible, our players were rightly jubilant at the final whistle, proud of the improvements they had made that were so evident throughout the match. Congratulations, Leckhampton girls, you really are a credit to our school!
