Wimblehampton

As Roger Federer and Serena Williams were demonstrating their skills at Wimbledon this summer, our very own Leckhampton tennis stars strutted their stuff in Wimblehampton, our annual knockout tennis tournament! After three weeks of intense competition, with some superb tennis being played throughout, Oscar Wilson was to be pitted against Toby Thompson for the boys championship, and Tilly Coley would face 2017 finalist, Libby Lavender.

Under flawless blue skies, hundreds of supporters flanked our very own centre court, and waited in anticipation for our finalists. The boys final would begin the entertainment, and early on Oscar Wilson seized control as Toby Thompson, with all of skill and determination, struggled to deal with Wilson’s precision.  Wilson won the first game 7 – 2. Thompson appeared to change tactics in the second game, which was far more competitive, but again, Wilson proved to be too strong, and was a deserved champion, running out a 7-2, 7-4 winner.

Libby Lavender strode out for her second final in as many years with determination, but knew she would not have an easy match with the talented and in form Tilly Coley facing her across the net.  Lavender began the match in sparkling fashion, storming to a 4-0 lead in not time, but Coley quickly found her range. Although Lavender ran out a 7-5 winner of this game, both players took to their seats knowing this was anyone’s match.  The second game continued in the same way, with barely more than a point between them  the whole way, and Coley winning not one but two game points along the way, but it was Libby Lavender who prevailed, in a nail biting clash, 7-5, 9-7.

All of our 4 finalists exited the court as champions in their own right, and held up their trophies with pride.

Well done to all of the children and staff that helped to make this such a special event, and an extra congratulations to Oscar Wilson and Libby Lavender, our Wimblehampton 2018 champions!
